Where to meet new people/friends in Dayton, Ohio?
I recently moved back to the Dayton area thanks to a nasty divorce. I am pretty lonely and really want to meet good Christian friends or friends in general.
I don't drink, so no bars. I am very interested in education, crafts, science, arts, older music, animals, nature, intellectual conversations, travel, board games, reading, etc.
Other than churches, does anyone have tips for where I can get out of the house and meet like-minded people in the Dayton, Ohio area? I'd prefer safe areas.
I'm looking for arts or crafts groups, lessons, volunteer ideas, art events, etc.-- those types of "good clean fun" where I can meet other women who aren't into drinking either. I am not really looking to date, so I'm mostly looking for women to pal around with, although, I am open to the idea of casual male friendships with no romantic expectations.
I am 30, but usually get along with older people well.

How does a guy meet new guy friends in college?
Ughh i feel like such a loner. I did have high school friends, and i hung out with them and their own friends. So we had our own posse. But i'm weird out by my best friend. now we ain't friends. i don't really want to see him. And like I don't feel like I have good communication with them. So I feel kind of lonely, and I need to make some new friends. But the thing is, isn't it much harder to make friends in college? You barely have a few minutes to talk to people before or after class. And it's hard to ask a guy to hang out. It just isn't socially acceptable or something with all this homophobia going on. like if i were to ask a guy i met in class and got to know to like get some food after class, so if it's a night class. that would seem weird to some folks. i don't know. and since it's some junior college, not everyone leaves too close to one another. i don't know. how do i meet some new people. and i feel people will think i'm weird just being with myself.

We ended up with groups that studied together, went from class to class together, ate lunch together. We all ended up hanging out together at some point.

I like the well balanced answers of "seven", for example.
And although I think that "michael w" 's view of the McCann case is appalling, LOL, I never miss any of his answers.
There are so many other 'regulars' who make this place worth coming back to day after day.
I have also noticed that insults and bad language have diminished.
Also, somehow people have become more polite in Current Events. Words like "cheers", "thanks", abound and that is great.
Finally, if what everyone calls 'trolls' still exist and are still around... they don't appear to damage the place very much. Current Events is still the best section in Yahoo Answers.

I was really scared of making new friends....I has one really good friend and I just hung around with her all the time. That kinda gets old...right? So just try sitting with new people. Talking with some people in your favorite class (so you have like a lot of things to talk about) then once you think that you have made a connection ask for her(or his) e-mail. But don't just get one new friend...try to make more. Oh, and always be yourself. It's OK to get kinda freaky sometimes and weird. But don't out on a mask all the time.

Meeting people outside of the computer is always better in my opinion. When you meet someone at a bar you like, or a bookstore you frequent, or a club you joined, etc. it shows you genuinely have similar interests, not ones that were made up to sound cool on a profile page. Plus you know from the get go what the person really looks like, sounds like, smells like, etc. And it is always easier to get the creep or not-creep vibe in real life than on a computer!

I just moved to Denver and am using it for that purpose. I am finding it very useful! Also, you could try volunteering. I started volunteering for Habitat for Humanity and have met some awesome people through that, as well. I like those two options because they are free and convenient, which are big pluses for me!

What is the best way to meet "friends" once you become a parent?
When your baby is old enough you can take him/her to the park. Libraries have certain days when they read books to little one's. If your baby goes to daycare you could strike up converasation with some of the other parents. Museums sometimes have things for little one's too. I would like to know what happened to all your friends you had before the baby?

Also try, Jazzercise or put an ad in your neighborhood newsletter to start a playgroup for new moms. While the babies are still young it'll be a great support system for you and as they grow it will become a basis for their first friendships.

Join an evening class. I joined a Japanese language class and made a couple of really good friends :) You could also get a dog and go walking in the park, I met a couple of people this way in the past. I know you said no websites but I met loads of good friends through a forum I joined. It was a forum about the kind of music that I like going out to and I asked if there were any other girls that I could go out with since none ofmy friends were into that kind of music, I got loads of replies and we then swapped myspace addresses and we organised a really big girls night out which was great, and at the end of the night all the boys from the forum turned up too!!! You could also go on holiday, if you go on an organised trip somewhere you'll get to know other people on the trip, then whilst you're all out drinking or sommat you might meet other people?! (that happened to me on a trip to New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville)

Join an evening class. I joined a Japanese language class and made a couple of really good friends :) You could also get a dog and go walking in the park, I met a couple of people this way in the past. I know you said no websites but I met loads of good friends through a forum I joined. It was a forum about the kind of music that I like going out to and I asked if there were any other girls that I could go out with since none ofmy friends were into that kind of music, I got loads of replies and we then swapped myspace addresses and we organised a really big girls night out which was great, and at the end of the night all the boys from the forum turned up too!!! You could also go on holiday, if you go on an organised trip somewhere you'll get to know other people on the trip, then whilst you're all out drinking or sommat you might meet other people?! (that happened to me on a trip to New Orleans, Memphis and Nashville)

I think meeting people in places that you go to do things you enjoy is a good start since you are likely to meet someone that shares your interests. Meeting friends on the internet is nice, but having someone to hang out with that lives nearby is much nicer. Do you have neighbors? I have met several people in the realworld that i chatted with online. I have the philosphy even though it's the net you should still be honest. Sorry to say i found those whom i met to be compulsive liars and sometimes the opposite of what i was told.
The last person i gave my address to, (a waitress for a Showme's type place) showed up in my driveway and was begging for sex. Needless to say i have more integrity as a man than to fall for that!
It just seems like people use the net to create their own alternate ego's/

Whatever you choose, you should believe in the cause that you are joining. You will not truely bond with the other people unless you are of 'like mind.' If you belong to a religion, church is a great place to meet friends other wise I would suggest volunteer organizations. Best of luck!

It depends on your situation. If you have kids then it's so much easier to meet new people. You just smile when dropping off your child at school. Or at the local shops, or at your new workplace, etc.
After becoming a little more familiar in whichever environment you're in make small talk. "Gosh the weather's been weird lately hasn't it?" or "Nice shoes!" or "I can't believe the price of sausages these days. They used to be a cheap meal!" etc
When a face has become a familiar one and the small talk is going well say "Would you like to grab a coffee/beer/etc?"
Actually that's how I've made friends, but for guys that approach might be a little odd. Join a gym, or sporting team, or church, or go to the same place on a regular basis (just not a playground unless you have kids...that would be creepy!)
